Eligibility Criteria

1. Education

You must have passed the 12th Standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University. While no prior experience is required, the ability to perform shorthand (stenography) is mandatory for the second stage.

2. Age Limit (As of August 1, 2026)

  • Stenographer Grade C: 18 to 30 years (Born between Aug 2, 1996, and Aug 1, 2008).
  • Stenographer Grade D: 18 to 27 years (Born between Aug 2, 1999, and Aug 1, 2008).
  • Age relaxation applies for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), and PwBD candidates.

Understanding the Selection Process

The selection process is designed to test both your general aptitude and your technical proficiency in shorthand.

Stage 1: Computer-Based Test (CBT)

The online exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions with a duration of 2 hours.

  • English Language & Comprehension: 100 Questions (100 Marks)
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 50 Questions (50 Marks)
  • General Awareness: 50 Questions (50 Marks)
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Stage 2: Stenography Skill Test

Candidates who clear the CBT cutoff will be called for the skill test. You will be given a dictation for 10 minutes at the following speeds:

  • Grade C: 100 words per minute (wpm).
  • Grade D: 80 words per minute (wpm).

Key Departments & Salary

Major recruiting departments this year include the CBDT, DoPT, and EPFO.

  • Grade C: Typically Level 6 or 7 of the Pay Matrix (Group B, Non-Gazetted).
  • Grade D: Typically Level 4 of the Pay Matrix (Group C).
